Falmouth Housing Corporation has broken ground on phase 1 of the Gifford Street Work Force Housing project.
The development consists of two buildings with 10 one-bedroom apartments. These units will be available initially, by lottery, to individuals whose income is below 80 percent and 50 percent of the area median income.
Occupancy date is estimated for September 2020.
The general contractor is The Valle Group, Inc. and the project is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development, Town of Falmouth and Falmouth Affordable Housing Fund. A construction loan was provided by Cape Cod 5 and a permanent loan from Massachusetts Housing Partnership.
According to Linda Clark, director of the Falmouth Housing Corporation, affordable housing is one of Falmouth’s most critical problems. This development will help address the acute need for rental housing in Falmouth.
